About Us

Garden of Cedar is a unique functional urban community garden and park in Scranton with meandering paths throughout designed in the form of a maze.

  • The Garden is free and open to the public.
  • Garden of Cedar’s pathways are ADA accessible.

People are welcome to come, get a plot, plant their own vegetables and flowers, or harvest what they need in designated take-what-you-need community planters.

During holiday seasons everyone in the community is invited to come join the fun of holiday themed events. 

Our Plots

Throughout Garden of Cedar, our raised planter beds are labeled with plaques featuring the names of Pennsylvania railroad lines, including Minooka and Laurel Line.

Does it cost anything to have your own plot?

Garden of Cedar is completely free and does not charge any fees for plots.  

How can I get my own plot?

Residents, educational institutions, cultural groups, and community-minded businesses are welcome to apply for gardening plots. Allocations are granted based on family and neighborhood needs and community efforts. The garden currently supports plots for Congolese and Bhutanese communities as well as several area schools and businesses who donate their produce to the local community To request a plot, tell us more about your interests by filling out the form on our Contact page.

Where can I plant?

Once you or your group is assigned a plot for the growing season, you will be able to plant vegetables and flowers in your allotted space. There are two water sources at the Garden, as well as a supply of gardening tools. All participants are required to maintain their plots in a neat and orderly manner, and remove all summer planting materials by the first week in October.

Your generosity means the world to us. Garden of Cedar strives to enhance the quality of life for residents and community members in Scranton’s South Side neighborhood. Garden of Cedar is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. EIN 84-3212076. Your donations help us keep our grounds clean, safe, and beautiful. Your gift will help sustain and grow our social impact. 100% of donations are applied to programs, services and capital improvements.

Can I go to the garden at any time of day?

Sure! The Garden is open during daylight hours, and during hosted special community events. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pedestrian traffic only. Mechanical vehicles are prohibited except for ADA devices.

I’d like to volunteer. What kinds of roles are available and who should I contact?

We are always looking for volunteer support with keeping our grounds clean as well as with planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and providing general assistance with special events. We also accept help with event support, social media, office assistance, and donations. To inquire about volunteering at Garden of Cedar, look at the Volunteer information section on our Contact Page, and email us about your interests and availability. Students or individuals in need of community service projects or hours are most welcome.
